MFJ’s Board Expands to Include a Former Florida Supreme Court Justice and a Former United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio

Judge Barkett brings her 45 years of experience with the criminal justice system to Measures for Justice’s work. In 1979, she was appointed a Florida state circuit court judge, and in 1985 she was appointed to the Florida Supreme Court—the first woman to serve in this position. From 1994 to 2013, Judge Barkett sat on the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. She currently serves on the Iran – United States Claims Tribunal.

Barkett has been inducted into the Florida Women’s Hall of Fame. She has also received the Judicial Achievement Award, The Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award, and the Latin Business and Professional Women Lifetime Achievement Award. In addition, every year two awards are given out in her honor: The Rosemary Barkett Outstanding Achievement Award by the Florida Association of Women Lawyers, and The Rosemary Barkett Award to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to equal justice under law.

Carter Stewart is a Managing Director at Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation. Stewart came to DRK from the U.S. Department of Justice where he served as the presidentially-appointed United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio. Stewart took a leadership role at DOJ in addressing inequities in the criminal justice system through his work raising awareness about the school to prison pipeline and by chairing a working group of U.S. Attorneys focused on reducing racial disparities in the federal system. Stewart received a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School in 1997. He holds a Master of Arts Degree in Education Policy from Columbia University and received his undergraduate degree in Political Science from Stanford University.
