Communitiesof Change

Portraits of community members, police and prosecutors, and partners who work with Measures for Justice, arranged as a bar chart.

Every lasting change begins with people who have the information, support, and determination to act.

Measures for Justice helps communities and justice agencies turn fragmented information into trustworthy data they can understand and use. When you give this year, you power the tools, expertise, and partnerships that help them see what is happening in their justice system and work together toward meaningful change.

Over 1.7 million residents

residents live in communities served by Commons sites, where communities and justice agencies work from the same data.

Your support helps communities see what is possible.

  1. Commons sites now serve communities home to over 1.7 million residents.
  2. In Michigan, data published through the National Data Portal now covers 82 of the state’s 83 counties, giving about 10 million residents near-statewide access to court data that previously required navigating fragmented local systems.
  3. Behind those numbers are communities, perhaps your own, that want safer neighborhoods, fairer outcomes, and a justice system they can trust. With the right information, they can ask important questions, work toward shared goals, and create lasting change.
  4. You help more communities be heard, and you give them the tools to build a better future together.

MFJ is based on the idea that data can change minds and change practices. I agree with them on that. MFJ knows that the professionals in law enforcement, the courts, and lawyers on all sides do their best work when they can access and understand the stories in the data. Supporting that cause is an easy decision.

The change you help drive

Case study Rochester, New York

Neighbors and police, shaping safer streets together

In Rochester, residents, business owners, and police leadership now sit at the same table with the same information. Through Rochester Police Department Commons, neighbors explore what is happening on their own streets, bring those trends into community meetings, and ask police leaders for real commitments.

  • Free, public access to neighborhood-level policing data, down to the census tract.
  • At Beachwood Neighborhood Coalition meetings, police command staff committed to changes such as adjusting patrol coverage.
  • Downtown business owners now make more targeted requests for public safety resources.

Let’s Be Clear Selma, Alabama

A judge in Selma on why every community deserves answers

Selma led the march for racial equality. Today, says Judge Vernetta Perkins of the Dallas County District Court, its justice system has left people in the dark. There is not enough usable information to answer even the basic questions, like who is in jail and for how long.

Her story is part of Let’s Be Clear, the MFJ series on why criminal justice data matters. You help meet that same need in courts across Alabama’s Fourth Judicial Circuit.

Help Bring Answers to More Communities Alabama’s courts, modernizing together

Data guides reform. Because how do you know where you’re going if you don’t know where you are? Data is the driving force, the navigator, the compass to tell you where to go.

Yolo County, California

Yolo County examined who had access to diversion, and changed course

When Yolo County leaders looked closely at their data, they saw patterns that could contribute to racial disparities in access to diversion. The district attorney’s office reconsidered how criminal history factored into eligibility and changed its review process.

Commons helps the office and the community keep watching, so they can tell whether policy changes make a difference: reveal a problem, inform action, and measure what happens next.

Help Turn Questions Into Action You helped Yolo County open doors to diversion

The Commons data portal allows people from every part of our county to have instant access to accurate information about our local criminal justice system. Let’s use this transparency and open data to facilitate new conversations and drive the best possible outcomes for the people of our community.
