Research Assistant

Full Time (1 Position) - Rochester, NY

At Measures for Justice (MFJ), our mission is to use data to measure and understand county-level criminal justice system performance in America. We collect, clean, code, and analyze county-level data to provide consistent, comparable, reliable, and objective performance measures across the entire criminal justice system, from arrest to post-conviction, on a county-by-county basis. Job Description

As a Research Assistant at MFJ, you will report to Senior Research staff and be responsible for helping MFJ develop a system to measure the performance of local criminal justice delivery.

Your work will include:

  • Assist in assessing data collection and research methods to measure comprehensiveness of data across all counties and states.
  • Conduct research on state policies relevant to our measures.
  • Conduct research on criminal justice resources and contextual information at the county level for all the criminal justice agencies in the jurisdiction.
  • Support Research Associate team members in cleaning and coding data from criminal justice agencies.
  • Aid in developing a standard operating procedure specific to criminal justice agencies.
  • Any other research tasks as defined by Senior Research management.

This position does not require the supervision of other employees.

Work Environment

Research Assistants are expected to work in the Rochester, NY office. MFJ provides all staff with a comfortable working environment, including office space, adjustable standing desks, and the required technology to meet job expectations. Research Associates work 40 hours per week, and are full time exempt employees.

  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system and research in the field.
  • A bachelor's degree in criminal justice, criminology, or a related field.
  • Prior data coding experience welcomed, but not mandatory
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
